The first step in dishoholicism it to admit you have a problem. Okay, okay...I have a problem. My friends always make fun of how many sets of dishes I have and I always just laughed them off. Doesn't everyone have 4 full sets of Christmas dishes, 2 sets of everyday, 4 sets of antique dishes, 2 sets of outdoor plastic dishes, 1 set of mix/matched shabby dishes and 1 set packed away in the attic that you just can't get rid of?????? Come on...this is not a problem...is it? The first set of dishes pictured here is the pattern that my mother got as a wedding shower gift over 50 years ago. She started collecting them several years ago and now we both have a set. The brown dishes in the bottom we have collected ALL my life. I remember as a child looking for these at flea markets and everywhere we went. The are now packed away in my garage and have enough servings to feed the Waltons, the Brady Bunch and the Octomom and her family! Yes, my name is Denis and I am a dishoholic...won't you join me?

Denis, I'm a dishoholic too. During our recent move I came face to face with the realization that I'm a collector-hoarder. The biggest collection been dishes. I collect anything with lots of roses, English and Homer Laughlin. I love the simplicity of creamware and ironstone too. I got rid of my set of English transferware I used for the fall and I never had a set of Christmas dishes. These days my dishes sit behind cabinet doors. I have so many collections of other things that I decorate with, plus I have gone completely monochromatic in my decor. Still, nothing like setting a wow kind of table for friends. Do you look at the bottom of dishes too? I love the old stamps, specially on ironstone. Believe me, there are so many far worse addictions out there. Have you seen the video of the lady that collect cats? 132 of them, I don't think so. Ours are low maintenance and don't smell. Can you imagine the stench in that house?

Ok. The one with the green leaves and red flowers on the tile. I do believe, quite strongly, that that was my grandmother's pattern. I just had a flashback and all I can smell is grease in the kitchen and biscuits in the oven. Thanks for the memory! ~Mindy

ReplyDeleteOkay Denis, let's start a support group! I've had a dish addiction since I was a lil girl. My grandmother referred to it as the "dish gene". Btw, I have 4 vintage sets myself, all left to me by my grandmother! Enjoyed this post!

ReplyDeleteGrace...unfortunately I don't. Some of them say USA on the bottoms and that is the only markings I can find. I searched USA patterns on ebay and on google, but can't find them. Not much help...sorry.
